JAKARTA - More than 30 scheduled domestic flights from Soekarno-Hatta international airport west of Jakarta were delayed today. This was caused by the fact that most passengers showed up late to board their plane because the main toll road to the airport was flooded by seawater due to high tides.
More than 30 scheduled domestic flights were delayed two to three hours. According to the office of the Airport Administrator for Soekarno-Hatta, Harry Bhakti, almost all passengers arrived too late at the airport. Outside that, a number of passengers that arrived at the airport from other destinations had to stay at the airport because there was no transport available for them to take them away from there.
Outside the road to the airport, the seawater also flooded a number of houses in the village of Kamal Malang, Kosambi in Tangerang. The water reaches levels of one meter. Residents fear that the water will continue to rise. To anticipate that, they have now moved to higher grounds. A number of residents was moving their property to an evacuation field as well. The local government in Tangerang has started preparing tents, food and a public kitchen for the victims of the flood.
The flood of seawater started some two days ago. Earlier the water just reached a few centimeters, but since last afternoon the water started to get increasingly higher.
