JAKARTA - Top film makers in Indonesia have launched a legal bid to have the country's censorship board disbanded. They say it stifles creativity. A group of five young directors lodged a petition with the Constitutional Court earlier this week, requesting the removal of provisions in the film law regulating the establishment of the censorship body. "The existence of the Indonesian Censorship Board is against our constitutional right to communicate and receive information," told Tino Saroengallo, an award-winning documentary film-maker.
Other petitioners are Nia Dinata, whose films "Arisan" and "Love for Share" won praise in bringing to the spotlight the sensitive issue of homosexuality and polygamy in the country. The office of the censorship board could not be reached for an immediate response. The Film Censorship Board has the power to censor film, music and advertisements. it's members are appointed by presidential decree and also includes religious clerics.
Now the board is much less controversial than under former president Suharto, when it regularly banned movies with political content. Even after the Suharto-era, who ruled for 32-years until he was forced to step down in 1998, the board still attracts criticism every once in a while. In 2005 it ordered the withdrawal of a film poster because of its caption 'The Best Indonesian is a Criminal', stating that it was too negative and could give the wrong impression about Indonesians.
