SERANG - Dark clouds hang over the Mount Anak Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait yesterday after a densely clouded sky blocked the sight of the ongoing eruption of molten rock, toxic gas and lava. Meanwhile, volcanic tremors continued. The weather in the area however was so bad that the hot clouds originating from the volcano were dampened quickly upon their release.
Officials of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center in Bandung, monitored the volcano from outside the three kilometer danger zone around the newly formed crater. Officials said that in twelve hours on Friday, from 06:00 to 18:00 (GMT+7), there were 182 eruptions together with 11 volcanic earthquakes, eight deep tremors, some 54 shallow shocks and exhaust of smoke. This all was a not too threatening situation.
Budiman, an official of the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center said that Mount Anak Krakatau was still spewing molten rock, hot clouds of ash and toxic gases. The volcano is currently placed on the third alert level, so people are strongly advised to stay at a distance of three kilometers from it. He said his office is still monitoring the activity of Anak Krakatau in anticipation of bigger eruptions and a tsunami.
