KEDIRI - The Mount Kelud volcano is dangerously close to an eruption on Monday as magma was pushing upwards through the blocked crater, causing boiling water to spill down it's slopes, according a volcanologist. The water level in the crater lake has fallen because of cracks in it's surface. This also caused damage to essential equipment used to monitor the volcano.
"Increased underground magma movement has built up pressure on the blocked entrance, causing the bottom of the lake to rise and crack," said Saut Simatupang, an official at the Center for Volcanology and Geological and Hazard Mitigation. The deadly volcano has spewed clouds of steam and ash as high as 500 meters on Sunday, a day after confusion over whether the volcano had already started it's eruption. Officials at an observation post could not visually confirm an eruption, however instruments indicated so.
Scientists suggest that hardened lava from previous eruptions - mainly the one in 1990 - could be blocking the current release of magma. They now warn that this eruption could come with a sudden burst when there is enough energy built up inside the volcano.
