KEDIRI - One day after an eruption was falsely reported for the Mount Kelud volcano, the volcano is still showing signs of an imminent eruption, a scientist said on Sunday. "An eruption is now very, very much possible, although so far it has not yet happened," told Agus Budianto, a geologist who is monitoring the activities of the volcano. On Saturday, continuous tremors inside the volcano became so strong that they could not be read on seismological instruments anymore. Scientists at an observation post feared an eruption and evacuated themselves.
At the time of their evacuation they could not confirm an eruption visually because the volcano was covered in clouds, but their warning caused residents to flee from the danger zones. Budianto said: "There was no lava or ash emitted by the volcano." The volcano's behavior however still indicates that an eruption was imminent, he added. "Besides the rising earthquakes and tremors, we are also witnessing a new phenomenon - smoke rising from the crater lake and the temperature of the water continuously rising," he told. A 15-meter deep lake fills the volcano's crater. "All these developments show that the volcano has reached some sort of point of no return," he added.
