KEDIRI - Authorities in the province of East Java have warned residents living on the slopes of the Mount Kelud volcano once more to stay at their temporary shelters since the risk of a major eruption remains high, according to officials on Wednesday. The 1,731-meter high volcano was placed on top alert on October 16, which caused the evacuation of thousands of people living inside the 10-kilometer danger zone around the crater.
Some 3,000 of 5,000 evacuees however have already returned to their homes, claiming it is not convenient to stay in a camp for two weeks. They defied warnings from local officials and scientists that the risk of a large eruption still remains very high. "Mount Kelud's risk of eruption remains high, so we warned the evacuees to continue staying at the temporary shelters," said Umar Rosadi, head of the emergency response team from the district of Kediri.
Experts at a nearby monitoring post said that the water temperature of the crater lake had now reached 39.5° C for the first six hours of Wednesday. That is slightly higher than the 39.3° C from three days ago, but still lower than the 40.0° C in the hours before the last eruption of the volcano in 1990.
