JAKARTA - A powerful tremor struck western Indonesia on Wednesday, a meteorology official said.
Indonesia meteorology and geophysics center told the Australian news agency that the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck before 03:00 a.m (20:00 GMT). The tremor was jolted at a depth of 35 km; its epicenter was recorded at 125 km southwest of the town of Padang.
Meanwhile the locale agency put the quake at 6.1 on the Richter scale and at a shallower depth of 20 km. There were no reports of casualties or damage. Officials said that residents on the area strongly felt the sudden earthquake. There was no tsunami warning issued. Last month, the Mentawi Island was hit by an 8.4 magnitude earthquake that killed at least 25 people and collapsed thousands of homes.
