BLITAR - The threat of an eruption of Mount Kelut (or Mount Kelud), one of the deadliest volcanoes in Indonesia, remains very high despite a slump in activity over the last dy or so. Frustration under tens of thousands of villagers which were forced to flee is also growing. Last week the status of the volcano was raised to the highest level after several warning signs. But since Saturday there hasn't been any major activity according to Surono, a government volcanologist. This makes it really difficult to convince evacuees to remain in their shelters.
"We are still in a situation of high alert," Surono said, stating that Mount Kelut has a history of only large eruptions, never small. "Once it goes off, it will be big. This is why we keep reminding people they have to stay clear of the crater." The last eruption of Kelut in 1990 killed 34 people and injured hundreds. In 1919, a powerful explosive eruption could be heard from hundreds of kilometers away. That one destroyed a hundred villages and killed over 5,000.
Local authorities have ordered the evacuation of some 116,000 people living on several of the volcano's slopes. More than 12,000 refused to do so until now telling that they had to take care of their crops and livestock. Many of the forced evacuees are now losing their patience and income.
Suyatno, who earns less than an euro a day picking clove and coffee beans for a plantation company said that he was very eager to return to his village Candisewu, less than five kilometers from the peak of Mount Kelut. "I can't wait any longer," said the 38-year-old father with three children. "I have to work. I need money for my family."
