BLITAR - A number of tremors shook the simmering volcano in eastern Java for about one hour on Friday, indicating that an eruption is imminent, according to an expert. The tremors, which are too small to be felt by humans, started around 15:00 local time, told Kristanto, chief volcanologist at the monitoring station near the Mount Kelut volcano. He said that the longest of the tremors just lasted some 45 seconds.
"This means that the magma is trying to break through a frozen-magma layer at the top of the volcano. We're closely monitoring whether the energy released from below will be able to break it out," he said. The temperature of the crater lake also further increased and now stands at 38.1° C, it reached 40.0° before it's last eruption in 1990. The volcano is located at some 90 kilometers to the southeast of Indonesia's second largest city of Surabaya.
Five villagers were brought to a hospital for treatment after they inhaled poisonous gases seeping from the earth while they were tending their farms on the slopes of the volcano. Sarmin, 46, passed out while harvesting and was brought to safety by his neighbor while four others felt faint. They are already released from the hospital by now. Earlier this month, two photographers fainted when trying to approach the crater.
