Situation report Mount Kelut volcano; no. 2 KEDIRI - According to the Head of Directorate for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Management in Bandung, who leads an assessment mission in Blitar, the activity of the Mount Kelud volcano is still increasing. The level of volcanic tremors has nevertheless decreased over the last day. The deformation process of the crater is also increasing, thus the eruption continues to be imminent. BAKORNAS PB reported that mud and poisonous gases are likely to be emitted from the volcano.

BAKORNAS PB reported that 22,154 people were evacuated thus the sub-districts listed below. Nevertheless, according to the same source, the number of evacuees in Kediri has significantly decreased from 28,130 to 10,803 persons since more then a half returned to their homes.

National response

A BAKORNAS PB team led by Chief Executive Officer (KALAKHAR) visited the affected areas on 17 October to strengthen coordination with SATKORLAK PB East Java and SATLAK PB (District Coordination Unit for Disaster Management) of Kediri and Blitar. BAKORNAS PB held a coordination meeting on 17 October at the Crisis Center BAKORNAS in Jakarta to coordinate distribution of the emergency supplies.

The local government of Kediri District mobilized 281 vehicles for evacuation. Additional two buses, four trucks, 17 other vehicles were mobilized on 17 October. The District Health Office put health community centres (Puskesmas) on standby in four sub-districts.

SATLAK PB Kediri has prepared four IDPs camps in four sub-districts equipped with clean water services and food supply from the community and the Office of Social Affairs at district level. The military (TNI) has established six field kitchens in four IDPs camps in Kediri District. The Office of Social Affairs East Java mobilized two mobile field kitchens to the Kediri District.

SATLAK PB Blitar has prepared field kitchen, 14 platoon tents, 10 family tents, and two health posts. The Department of Social Affairs provided blankets, kitchen utensils, plastic mats, mattresses through SATLAK PB Kediri and Blitar districts. The Department of Health is also supported by Kimia Farma, a medical supply company, in provision of medical supplies.
