JAYAPURA - Armed rival tribes fought close to a gold mine in Papua province on Thursday. This clash is the latest in a series of clashes that have killed four people according to police and an official from the U.S. company. At least 45 people were injured in the fighting in the remote region since Tuesday, told local police chief Godhelp Mansnembra.
Fighting broke out in villages close to the giant gold and copper mine operated by Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Mine Inc., told Mindo Pangaribuan, a spokesman for Freeport. He also said that the fighting was not related to any of the company's operations and production of the mine was not affected. Meanwhile Mansnembra told that mediation efforts had failed so far.
"We don't know the actual cause of the problem, but fighting has broken out again today Thursday," he said. "In the morning they fight, then they stop for lunch and a rest, and then in the afternoon they fight again." Tribes in the remote area - some 3,200 kilometers east of Jakarta - have a history of bad relations. Fights and conflicts can last for several weeks and are normally ended when the number of victims on both sides is equal.
