BANDUNG - Authorities in East Java warned residents living on the slopes of the Mount Kelut volcano on Sunday of possible dangerous activity at one of the most active volcanoes in the world, according to local media. Local authorities in the district of Kediri have prepared dozens of police and military in case an evacuation is ordered now the alert status of the volcano has been risen to three out of four.
"The frequency of the tremors and crater's temperature of Mount Kelut volcano has continued to increase since Saturday," told Umar Rosadi, head of the emergency response team from Kediri district, about 600 kilometers south-east of the capital Jakarta. Rosadi told that the activity has been increasing over the last few days, adding that local government officials have spread leaflets advising residents to prepare for a possible evacuation.
Vulcanologists issued recommendations for nearby residents, including an advice that they should not be in a five kilometer zone around its crater. Deputy chief of the subdistrict of Ngancar told that 70 soldiers had been mobilized to help in case of an evacuation of the around 24,000 residents in six villages inside the danger zones. The 1,731-meter volcano last erupted in 1990, when 22 people were killed.
