YOGYAKARTA - A number of earthquakes that struck the area west of Padang and Bengkulu in the last two days has caused at least ten deaths, two in the city of Bengkulu, five in Mukomuko district and three in North Bengkulu district. The death toll was lower than first feared after it became clear that the earthquakes were not as destructive on land as first thought. Also there was no tsunami, however there were tsunami-alerts issued three times during the series of earthquakes.
Furthermore there are at least 132 houses in the city of Bengkulu that are destroyed. Another 1.200 are heavily damaged and can not be used anymore. 2.600 houses were slightly damaged. More to the coast of Bengkulu another 200 houses have been destroyed and 800 were badly damaged. Other area's around Bengkulu show similar damage, but no statistics are released yet. Also damaged are houses of worship and some office buildings in the city.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has announced emergency aid for the two provinces hardest hit during the quakes.
