JAKARTA - Some 500 families have been evacuated from the slopes of the Karangetang volcano on the island of Siau, near northeast Sulawesi. The evacuations come after a warning from authorities that an eruption could be imminent. The alert status of the volcano was raised on Saturday; advising that at least two villages were to be evacuated.
Other villages in the area are asked to be on standby for evacuation in case there was need to do so. The mountain spewed lava and hot volcanic debris as far as 2,000 meters down it's slopes on Friday.
