There she is, the Indonesian Playboy YOGYAKARTA - However I have been asked for it several times before, I didn't own my very own Indonesian version of the very well-known magazine for the male part of the population. Until today, because I happen to run into a brand new one today, partially hidden behind other well-known names like FHM, Cosmo and Maxim. Directly I picked the dark-colored cover with gold-colored print from the top shelf. The beautifully thick glossy cover has been sealed in a thin plastic cover; if you want to see inside you first have to pay 50.000 Rupiah for it. Free is not for Playboy, you can pick any other magazine with a more 'modest' cover; a women just as pretty as the one in Playboy, but then wearing a Jilbab to cover her long black hair.

What will Playboy be talking about this time? Marxists, fishermen, Anna Nicole Smith, John Lennon and Yoko. That's about it for the main articles. Of course they have added some fine ladies in nice outfits, or at least pictures of those. No bare breasts and other meat on sale. If you are looking for that, check the local supermarket, because this Playboy doesn't have that. But with watching the front cover along it is already clear that this is a jewel which needed much attention to create. A warm picture of a 29-year-old woman - mother of two - leaning against the rocks with her arms wide. Taken from above to accentuate some parts of the female body, but no focus on that.

The first thing which is remarkable that it's no Indonesian lady that is on the front cover. With such a large country it must be possible to fill all those editions with those nice women from tanah air. Natacha Geisler is from Greenland, but when walking through the magazine - over a hundred full-color glossy sheets of paper with articles and pictures - you will see that there are a few Indonesian women inside. The first is the 'employee of the month' which is sitting down on the bar of her employer in a rather awkward position. We can all go to Red Square Jakarta to see Risna W.R. Most likely you will pay an entry fee to offset the cost of advertising the brand in Playboy. She doesn't drink while working and don't bring whiskey as well, she doesn't like that because of the odor. Nice to know.

The cover of Playboy Indonesia is similiar to that of FHM and Maxim, which all target the same audience.

After the lady on the bar there are some pages with many short pieces of information about gadgets, cars, books, cd's and a page-filling advertisement from Gudang Garam to stimulate smoking a little bit more, because that is also what rich people do. The first ten pages give a clear sign at which people the magazine is targeted. Not for pussies is something you could say about it. Outside luxury cars - what's the use in Indonesia; there are no roads or you are in a traffic jam - a huge article with John Lennon. Dead for quite some time now, but because Playboy did an interview with him, they translated that into Indonesian as well now. Interesting if it is your taste, so I was able to skip several pages initially. I will read it later for sure.

After the several pages long article with John Lennon - beautifully in style with simple black print on a white background and several nice pictures of him and Yoko - was skipped there was something completely different waiting. A Sara with three other names (okay, search yourself at Google, you won't find anything about her). Playboy names her Super Sara. A picture on the right side of the magazine shows her in a nice set of lingerie. Stylish and somewhat lazy on a big dark couch. Quickly I looked for her other pictures as well. This edition is not interrupted by commercials every few minutes like on Indonesian televisions. That's very nice.

A new page and again two page-sized pictures; the one in black and white on the right side is the one that is most challenging. Two big eyes look at you while you can't see much more than just her face. Nice work. Again a turn of a page to find probably the most 'extreme', to state it in the words that were used during court sessions against Playboy for indecency. What exactly do you see then? Ooh well, let's have a try; Sara in black lingerie with her legs spread. The picture is taken from the frond. Probably not the best one in this edition of Playboy, but for sure the most daring one and of course completely 'indecent', like the people who brought Playboy to court for it. They lost by the way, and it is perfectly clear why to me now.

The magazine itself is very much thought about when arranging it for the higher class with interesting articles and a few series of less-than-usual dressed women - which seems to disturb a very small group people in Indonesia. That should not be allowed, because it is very indecent. How do they know it? Probably they are not allowed to look at it themselves because of their interpretation of their holy book and the price of 50.000 Rupiah will prevent those who occasionally dress in white linen when demonstrating against something 'indecent' from buying one as well.

Because of these problems, Playboy Indonesia has been put on the map directly from its launch. It took several months to calm down and the recent verdict - not guilty - is for now the final chapter of the introduction of Playboy in Indonesia. They have done a good job. However the magazine can't be bought everywhere yet, it slowly emerges on more and more places. Maybe on the highest shelf behind a somewhat religious magazine, but that doesn't matter. At least potential buyers know how to find it that way.

If you want to be the owner of an original Playboy Indonesia, you can ask the seller of the magazines around the corner. If he has it, he will be happy enough to sell it. If he doesn't have it, you can at least ask him where to get it, and you will be guided there.

For 50.000 Rupiah you are able to purchase a piece of Indonesian history, cheap huh? It might also be the case that unused magazines are a much sought-after item outside Indonesia because not too many are printed anyway. With buying that, you will get a big amount of free articles and photo's as well. What you do with that is not my concern and also don't ask me if you can buy mine. You won't get it, because I started collecting Indonesian history just now.
