SIDOARJO - Large amounts of water have been shooting out of the ground in homes and a restaurant hundreds of meters away from the submerged area of land near the mud volcano in Eastern Java. Experts tell that these bursts are caused by underground pressure linked to the flow of mud flowing out of a drilling site near Sidoarjo, just south of Indonesia's second largest city of Surabaya.
"The new bursts are caused by the mud flow. People have to be cautious because the bursts may carry toxic gases such as methane and hydrogen sulphide," told Amin Widodo, a researcher from a local university. Residents tell that the bursts first appeared several months ago when a one-meter high geyser of water and gas shot out of the floor in a living room almost one kilometer from the mud volcano.
Since then, the eruptions have become more frequent and much higher. Earlier this week a mixture of hot water and fine sand reached heights of five meters, damaging the rood of an abandoned coffee shop next to the main railroad. "I thought it was raining but when I stepped out of my stall I saw that water was bursting out of the restaurant's kitchen," said Lilik, who owns a nearby cigarette stand.
