JAKARTA - A man who slaughtered chickens and then ate them has died of bird flu according to a health official on Thursday. This case would bring the human death toll in Indonesia to 80. Suharda Ningrum, a representative from the bird flu center from the Health Ministry, said that the man died last Tuesday. The man was admitted to a hospital in Pekanbaru last Monday.
The representative said that the man lived on a palm oil plantation in a remote area and that he had been in contact with sick birds. "He kept some chickens in his house. At least three died all of a sudden and he slaughtered the rest," told Husnedi, adding that the entire family ate them and only the man got sick the next day. "He suffered from high fever and had difficulty breathing."
Bayu Krisnamurthi, head of the bird flu commission, confirmed the latest death at a news conference. Azizman Saad, head of the hospital's bird flu section told that the other family members were currently being monitored. "His family has been examined and we are waiting for the results. So far, none have developed bird flu symptoms."
