JAKARTA - The Indonesian police confirmed Wednesday that Abu Dujana, suspected of being military leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group, had been arrested and was in custody in Banyumas, Central Java.
The national police spokesman, Sisno Adiwinoto, said at a news conference that Dujana, who was recently put at the top of the Indonesian most wanted list and is believed to be an Afghan-trained militant with links to Al Qaeda, had been arrested over the weekend along with six other terrorism suspects.
He said it took several days to confirm Dujana's identity because he uses many aliases. The police first suspected that he was one of Dujana's top aides. Dujana, 37, is suspected of being the leader of the military branch of Jemaah Islamiyah, a terrorist network in Southeast Asia. He was captured after a series of raids throughout Central Java by Densus 88, the Indonesian elite anti-terrorism unit.
Another of the most wanted terrorists in Indonesia, the Malaysian born militant Noordin Top, remains at large. Police think that Dujana played an important role in protecting other important terrorists in Southeast Asia, including Noordin after he was almost apprehended in 2005.
