JAYAPURA - Thousands of workers from a mine in the easternmost province of Papua continued to strike for a third day yesterday, disrupting work at one of the biggest copper mines in the world. The workers moved their rally to a site outside the local headquarters of PT. Freeport Indonesia in Timika while protest leaders resumes talks with the company's officials in an attempt to reach a deal.
Hundreds of policemen stood guard and watched the rally when thousands of workers danced and chanted protest slogans. Two days ago both parties held talks at the parliament building in Timika, some 100 kilometers away from the Grasberg mine. They didn't reach a final deal then.
The controversial Grasberg mine, operated by a local unit of New Orleans-based Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc., is among the biggest copper and gold mines in the world. In the past it has frequently seen violent worker protests while environmental groups complain of alleged pollution and unfair distribution of profits. In Jakarta, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Mines and Energy Resources Minister asked both parties to resolve their disputes directly.
Purnomo told that if the strike continued, it would disrupt mining production capacity and eventually affect state revenues. "There were no reports of violence," police spokesman Kartono Wangsadisastra said. Tongoi Papua, which represents native Papuans, is demanding better wages and pensions as well as improved methods of hiring indigenous Papuans.
