JAKARTA - Some 300 victims from the mud flow in eastern Java rallied outside the State Palace earlier today to demand proper compensation for their lost property. The protesters from Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo, demanded that the government gives them compensation for their home and land that are flooded by the flow of mud coming out from a gas well drill owned by Lapindo Brantas in Sidoarjo.
"We are here to demand that the government compensate us 100 percent in cash and that the payments be made to us directly," said Sony Puji Sasono, leader of the "Solidarity with Lapindo Mud flow Victims Alliance," on the sidelines of the rally. Sasono said that after the demonstration some of the demonstrators would be received by Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare. He was the one to bring their case to Parliament as well. "If our demand is not met, we will stay in Jakarta," he said.
The victims, most of them residents from housing complex Tanggulangin Anggun Sejahtera I (TAS), managed to leave Surabaya despite actions from local police to prevent them from departing to Jakarta. When they arrived in Jakarta, they gathered at the Proclamation Monument in downtown Jakarta. From there they marched to the State Palace.
