JAKARTA - Bird flu has killed a 15-year-old girl from Jakarta today, bringing the death toll in the country to 73, an official said Friday. "The girl died Thursday," said a spokesman from the bird flu information center in Jakarta. "She has been confirmed positive for the virus by two labs." The girl was admitted to an intensive care unit. She was the 93rd confirmed case.
Most human infections occurred after contact with sick poultry. The government has officially banned the practice of keeping poultry in backyards in Jakarta to curb the spread of the disease. Enforcement of this regulation is a big problem however. Indonesia earlier hoped to bring a halt to the virus this year, but now the death toll over 2007 already stands at 15.
