SIDOARJO - State oil and gas company Pertamina has shut off gas lines near the Sidoarjo mud volcano after the main railway link and toll road were flooded with hot mud again. The steaming crater, located near the second-largest city in the country, Surabaya, first began spewing mud in May last year after a failed exploratory gas drilling at the site.
The mud has inundated some 600 hectares including many homes and factories, leaving thousands of people homeless or without jobs, or both. The mud threatens to swamp the key railway link completely, efforts are made to reroute it away from the danger zone.
