Mud volcano stops 30 minutes, experts baffled SIDOARJO - The mud volcano that has displaced over 15,000 briefly stopped spewing hot mud for the first time in the more than nine months the volcano is active. Scientists are baffled by the news. "The flow of mud coming out of the crater suddenly stopped for about 30 minutes shortly before noon on Monday," said Rudi Novrianto, spokesman for the government team active working to plug the flow.

"None of our team members knows for sure what happened and we are still trying to determine how it happened," Novrianto said. The crater, just south of the second-largest city in the country, Surabaya, merely bubbled during the break. The temporary stop was the first since it became active last May. Experts are trying to slow down the volcano by dropping chains of concrete balls in the crater. This bold plan has already been written off by some experts as impossible.

The pause was most likely not related to the activities at the location, said Bagus Endar Bachtiar Nurhandoko, an official from the team fighting the mud volcano. He said that the stop may have been related to a partial collapse of the funnel below the surface, creating an obstruction that was eventually cleared by mounting pressure in the crater. "We were worried that an explosion would follow, but it turned out not to be the case," Nurhandoko said.
