JAKARTA - Ferry boats have halted the route between Merak in West Java and Bakauheni in Sumatra during the last 11 days because of extremely bad weather. Waves in the route over the Sunda Strait sometimes reached a height of four meters, as was told by assistant supervisor Mudhofar of state ferry company ASDP.
"Right now the weather is still bad, and the ferry boats still hesitated to resume their operation, but left their passengers in the care of the bigger vessels," he said. He told that the express boats would only be put back in action when they received a green light from the port administrator in Merak.
To accommodate all passengers, ASDP has maximized the operation of so-called roll-on roll-off boats. He said the fifteen boats served up to 30 trips a day, but even these boats had some difficulties mooring at the port because of the high waves. This causes slight delays in unloading. "Loading and unloading of passengers are still manageable," Mudhofar said.
