JAKARTA - Australia offered more medical aid to Indonesia after a Garuda Indonesia plane crashed. The Australian Embassy in Jakarta contacted the office of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to offer more medical help, as was said by Prime Minister John Howard. "The Indonesians have indicated that they will be very ready to take that up if it is needed," Howard told on television on Thursday.
23 people are confirmed dead after the plane overshot the runway, crossed a street and burst into flames in ricefields when it tried to land at the airport in Yogyakarta, in central Java. Over 100 passengers and crew survived, but Australia is still checking local hospitals for five missing citizens who are feared to have died. They included two federal policemen and a journalist.
Commissioner Mitch Keelty of the Australian Federal Police told that there was no evidence the crash was not just an accident. Disaster victim identification experts from AFP are helping their Indonesian colleagues at the site of the crash. "Unfortunately we are once again working on another tragedy in Indonesia," said Keelty, admitting that hopes for the two missing AFP officers were fading.
Two Australian air force officers who survived told that the plane had been travelling too fast. "The aircraft came in way too fast, was unable to stop in time and then ploughed across the end of the runway through a road," Downer told Australian television. Crash survivor Kyle Quinlan, member of the Australian military, said the plane had bounced heavily while trying to land. "I looked out on the right and side and saw how fast we were coming in, that's when we hit the ground," he said.
