JAKARTA - Australian pedophile Peter William Smith is sentenced to ten years in prison for sexually abusing street children in Jakarta. Judges in the South Jakarta District Court found that Smith had used 'economic coercion' in paying the teenage male victims to perform sexually related acts on each other and on him. The judges took in account this coercion and fined the English teacher 75 million Rupiah (6,276 euro) on top of the jail term.
The added penalty was important because prosecutors had only requested for a 60 million Rupiah fine. Generally monetary penalties, even for more wealthy foreigners, are often a merely symbolic value in the Indonesian courts. With handing down the sentence, the judges note that Smith, a teacher in the government-funded Indonesia Australia Language Institute, had previously committed offences in India, Pakistan and Australia.
Smith lured his young victims, aged in their early teens, to his home in South Jakarta with the promise of money. Sex parties were held at Sundays after he arrived in the capital in 2000. Police has seized computers, posters, pornographic DVD's and videos. Duplicating equipment has been removed from the house as well after Smith was arrested.
Smith paid the children between 35,000 and 70,000 Rupiah (2,90 - 5,85 euro) per encounter. He has repeatedly claimed he was merely offering them an economic opportunity with they would otherwise not have had. He earlier served four years in jail in Australia in the 1990's, back then under the name Ellis David Eyre, for sexually abusing young Aboriginal children. When he was released he changed his name. Despite his sex offender status he escaped the scrutiny of the Indonesian authorities.
The Jakarta school where Smith was a teacher, which is operated under AusAid and teaches professionals and businesspeople, not children, has been hit by a serious scandal twice in the last year. Smith's arrest was followed by a suicide of suspected pedophile Don Hancock, a member of staff of a branch in Surabaya.
Some of Smith's young victims were in court and expressed disappointment he had not been given the 15 years of imprisonment allowed under Indonesia law. Smith, who covered his had with plastic while being escorted from his cell to the court, refused to comment. He would discuss appealing.
