POSO - Police raided a suspected Islamic militant stronghold in central Indonesia on Monday, touching off a gunbattle that killed an officer and two civilians, police said. The clash took place in Poso town on Sulawesi Island, the scene of bloody fighting between Muslim and Christian gangs six years ago and sporadic bombings and shootings by Islamic extremists since then.
The battle Monday lasted more than three hours, witnesses in the town said. "One officer and two other people were killed," said an officer at Poso police station. The officer did not give his name, saying he had orders not to speak to the media about the operation. The identities of the two dead civilians were not known.
On Jan. 11, police in Poso killed a man they said was a senior member of the al-Qaida-linked regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah, which was blamed for the 2002 Bali bombings and other deadly attacks in Indonesia in recent years. Since then, officers have clashed several times with suspected militants.
