JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia predicts the country`s economy will grow between 5.7 and 6.3 percent this year while the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts it will grow by six percent.
"The central bank`s board of governors predicts Indonesia`s economy will grow even higher and macro-economic stability would be maintained," BI governor Burhanuddin Abdullah said here on Thursday.
He said the country`s economy was projected to grow between 5.7 and 6.3 percent, which is higher than the year before which was expected to reach 5.5 percent. Assumption of economic growth in the 2007 budget is set at 6.3 percent. Burhanuddin said consistency in the implementation of macro-economic policies, sharpening of structural policies and speed of implementation of the policies would be the prerequisites of better economic growth.
In view of that, all national elements needed to have a commitment to work hard under coordination to meet the target. The IMF predicts the country`s economy will only grow by six percent as a new investment growth is expected only after the first semester. "I think six percent is the most likely figure in accordance with the prediction of many quarters including analysts. Of course it is only a prediction," IMF chief representative for Indonesia Stephen Schwartz said here on Thursday.
He said the government`s target of 6.3 percent was too ambitious. "It could only be achieved if the government could implement its investment climate improvement program and infrastructure development program," he said. He said investment and exports were projected to slightly increase in 2007. He said exports that grew strongly lately would decline this year.
Stephen meanwhile predicts the economic growth in 2006 to reach about 5.5 percent.
"We have observed many developments in the increase including consumption but investment indicators are still weak," he said.
