POLEWALI - Indonesia's transportation minister now said rescuers haven't yet found the wreckage of an Indonesian jetliner that crashed Monday. Earlier, aviation officials reported that the wreckage had been found, and that 90 bodies were scattered at the crash site. There were even reports of 12 survivors, although officials later disputed that.
The country's transportation minister now said searchers are still trying to find the location of the crash. He said earlier reports were based on rumors from villagers. Other senior aviation officials are also backing away from reports that wreckage was found. The U.S. Embassy said three of the 102 people on board were Americans.
Dozens of people who survived an Indonesian shipwreck have been picked up by fishing boats, but another 400 people are missing. The victims were aboard a ferry that capsized last Friday in heavy seas off central Indonesia. Strong winds and poor visibility are preventing planes from taking off to look for the people. Ships, however, are on patrol off Java.
Nearly 200 people have been found alive since the ferry went down and authorities said they will keep searching until Sunday. Thirteen corpses have been recovered and scores of others have been spotted floating at sea. Air force planes have dropped food and water to some survivors stranded in the Java Sea. A temporary morgue is being set up at a nearby port and hundreds of body bags are being prepared, while relatives wait and weep.
