Landslides and floods in Lampung, Mataram, Semarang and Sambas YOGYAKARTA - Heavy downpours continue to cause severe problems throughout the Indonesian archipelago. In several places flash floods and landslides occurred in the last few days. Indahnesia.com gathered several messages and put them together as a news item.

Lampung, South Sumatra

Some 132 houses, one elementary school building and one mosque in West Lampung District, were damaged by whirlwind recently, a local official of the West Lampung district administration, Basuki Rahmat, said here on Tuesday. Tens of trees fell down after being hit by the whirlwind. Strong wind continued to occur in the district up to now, especially in the morning and evening, he said.

Apart from whirlwind, landslides also affected few roads in West Lampung last Sunday (Dec. 31). However, it did not disturb the land transportation. Residents of West Lampung were told to be on the alert for more possible landslides and floods as the peak rainy season is expected to occur in January and February.

Mataram, Nusa Tenggara

Two-day incessant downpours triggered landslides in Dasan Agung, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara Province, on Tuesday. The landslides in the basin area of Jangkok River threatened around 10 houses to collapse, a local resident, said.

West Nusa Tenggara Governor Lalu Serinata earlier asked mayors and district heads in the province to be on the alert for possible landslides and floods as the rainy season has come. He particularly pointed at Bima city and West Lombok, which are located in hilly areas, as areas prone to landslides and floods.

Ungaran, Semarang, Central Java

Five people sustained serious and minor injuries when landslides hit their homes in Beji village, East Ungaran, Semarang district, at 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon, sources said. They are now receiving medical treatment at the Ungaran general hospital.

The landslides forced people to abandon their homes for fear of further landslides. The landslides were triggered by heavy rains. Floods inundated Cemara residential complex, forcing many of the residents to flee their homes.
Sambas, West Kalimantan

Hundreds of houses in Sambas district, West Kalimantan province, have been lying in 30 centimeters of flood waters following incessant downpours and the sea`s high tide over the past five days. The floods got worse on Tuesday as heavy rains fell almost the whole day on Monday.

The floods inundated 107 houses in Sambas sub district`s Lumbang and Lubuk Dagang villages, and 201 houses in Tebas sub district. There were no reports of casualties in the disaster so far. Most of the people panicked and were trying to save their belongings, Lumbang Asyaifullah, a local resident, said.

"Houses in Pelanjau Bukit Segoler village are covered by water reaching a height of up to 3 meters. In Pangkalan Kongsi, the flood water level reaches 50 cm ," Dahir, a policeman, said.
