JAKARTA - Millions of Indonesian Muslims, including President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, First Lady Mme. Ani Yudhoyono, and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, performed Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) prayers for the 1427 Hegira under cloudy skies and rains at mosques throughout the country on Sunday morning.
Idul Adha must be used by the Muslims to clean up themselves, soften their heart and straighten their way of thinking, Nazarudin Umar said in his sermon during the Idul Adha prayer at Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, here on Sunday.
"Idul Adha is a day full of meaning and humanitarian events. We hope that this Muslim Holiday could become the best momentum to clean up our hearth which might be dirty, soften our soul which might be hard, and straighten our way of thinking which might be bendy," Nazarudin, a dean of the Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic Institute, told the Muslims who prayed in the country's largest mosque.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Mme. Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Mrs. Mufidah Jusuf Kalla and a number of ministers performed Idul Adha prayer at Istiqlal Mosque. Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni was in Saudi Arabia to help handle problems, especially concerning consumption, facing Indonesian hajj pilgrims.
Nazarudin Umar called on the Muslims to follow the example of Prophet Ibrahim, who were sincerely willing to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismail, to obey Allah the Almighty.
After the Idul Adha prayer, President Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla presented a cow each to the Istiqlal Mosque committee for sacrifice. Muslims were told slaughter goats or cows during the Idul Adha and the meat of the sacrificed animals would be distributed for the poor.
Parts of Muslim communities in various regions in Indonesia held Idul Adha (Day of Sacrifice) prayers on Suturday (Dec. 30), one day ahead of the date set by the government. The decision to conduct Idul Adha prayers on Saturday was linked to the official announcement of the Saudi Government that the wukuf rituals would be conducted on Friday. But the Indonesian government had decided that Idul Adha prayers was conducted on Sunday.
