JAKARTA - Sixty nine people have been rescued from a sinking passenger ship carrying over 600 people at the waters off Indonesia's Central Java province earlier Saturday, head of rescue team Riyadi said. "The weather is unfavorable, very strong wind and heavy rain keeps pouring down, make us difficult to rescue them," he told Xinhua on telephone from the province.
"Two helicopters failed to reach the site of the accident due to the bad weather," the rescuer said, adding that most of the survivors were helped by the sailors. Hundreds of families of the victims have sadly poured to the port in Semarang, the capital of the province, waiting for information about the member of their families whom were on board, said Kirtoharjono, head of the port.
East Java provincial Meteorology and Geophysics Agency warned people not to sailing in the north waters of the Java Island within the next three days due to the bad weather, according to a report by Antara newswire Saturday. The passenger ship sank at midnight Friday Jakarta time in Indonesia's Central Java province and the poor weather with giant waves was blamed for the cause of the sinking, said Indonesian Armed Forces spokesman Rear Admiral Soenarto.
"The ship sank after sailing 20 miles (32 km) north of Mandalika Island, north of the Central Java province," Soenarto said.
