BANDA ACEH - A former rebel leader has been officially declared the winner of gubernatorial elections in Aceh province, the electoral commission said Friday, confirming initial quick-count results earlier this month. Irwandi Yusuf, who was in jail for treason when the Indian Ocean tsunami crashed into Aceh in 2004, won 38 percent of the vote. His closest rival, Ahmad Humam Hamid, trailed with 16 per cent, provincial election chief Muhammad Jafar told reporters.
Yusuf and his newly elected deputy, Muhammad Nazar, will govern the oil- and gas-rich province on Sumatra's northern tip for five years, Muhammad Jafar said, adding that just over 2 million of 2.6 million registered voters turned out on election day. The Dec. 11 elections for Aceh's governor, mayors and district chiefs were the province's first ever direct local elections. They came just over a year after separatist rebels signed a peace agreement with Indonesia's government to end 29 years of fighting.
More than 15,000 people were killed before the warring sides agreed to lay down weapons, a move credited with helping to hasten delivery of aid to survivors of the tsunami that killed or left missing 167,000 people in Aceh alone.
