MATARAM - Many people in East Timor which gained independence from Indonesia through a United Nations-sponsored referendum in August 1999 have begun to regret the secession, Mrs. Domingos, an East Timorese woman visiting her relatives here said on Friday. "Independence from Indonesia is being enjoyed by only a certain group of people while the majority in remote areas have been living in deepening misery since the secession," Domingos said.
She said life for people in remote areas in East Timor after independece was not as easy as when their country was still an Indonesian province. "Therefore, most people have begun to regret the secession from Indonesia. They long for a return to the free and normal life they used to have," Mrs. Domingos said, adding that many East Timorese had been feeling unsafe in their own country following the violent clashes between people from the eastern and people from the western parts of the country.
In addition, she said, the cost of living in East Timor was much higher than in Indonesia. For example, a liter of gas in the country costs US$2.5 per liter or about Rp15,000 while in Indonesia it was only Rp4,000 per liter.

Yes I realize that.. one of my friend is living there and always complain about the price in USD and how expensive life is.. She wants to move back to Indonesia but her passport is Timor leste and Indonesian government seems very difficult to accept people from this place back... guess what HABIBIE thinks now!!! That dude is sittin'now somewhere in German and enjoy his so-called-fantastic life.
PS: Habibie is one of the Indonesian president that decided the vote. BIG MISTAKE!!! Jeroen... thanks for bringing up this issue!!

No , that is not a mistake.Only the timing is wrong.
The indonesians have no bussiness there.
And every nation must make sacrifices for their freedom.

Right uncle Sid. Habibie had the guts to do it and a longer term vision then most of his fellow countrymen. He has been the only real president until now (well, he's not Javanese and therefore not hindered by a Javanese cultural background).
Anyway, he did the right thing. But if the East-Timorese did the right thing..... that's another chapter. Based on emotions they choose for independance. But can this small country survive on its own? I doubt. Ethnic wise and geographical it's a part of Indonesia; only the colonials created a divison between the western and the eastern part.
