SIDOARJO - The explosion of a gas pipe of state-run company Pertamina near the center of the drilling well of PT Brantas Lapindo in Porong, Sidoarjo (East Java) has caused a hole in the tollroad ahead. The hole is at least three to five meters wide and is located at kilometer 38. A reporter of Antara news on the scene reported earlier today that the hole in the road is more than big enough for a dumptruck.
A representative of the company that maintains the tollroad (Kasi Perawatan Jalan Tol), Widarto confirmed the hole in the tollroad at kilometer 38.4. The hole is caused by the earth being washed away at the location. Ever since the construction of the tollroad there are such small events, but this is the first time that a lag has reached this magnitude. According to Widarto the condition of the tollroad has been checked several times before the explosion of the gas pipe and the hole being created by workers of Jasa Marga (tollroad manager), the Indonesian army and the local police. They also reported that the soil beneath the tollroad was not stable at this point.
"It is suspected that directly under the asphalt where the hole is now, the base construction of the tollroad is damaged and cracked as well," said Widarto. It is sure that several people were working at the tollroad during the explosion, since the asphalt had already started to crack over a distance of a few meters on this location.
"The earth beneath the highway has probaly lagged and has also damaged the gas pipe until the point it was not able to maintain itself any longer and broke," said several of the people who had survived the explosion without getting injured. Because of the big hole in the road it is not likely that the tollroad can be used any time soon. Also parts of the tollroad have been indundated in a thick layer of mud, reaching 30 meters at certain points.
