JAKARTA - Indonesia has to pay a fine of more than US$30,000 to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for unilaterally cancelling its participation in the Israel Fed Cup, in Tel Aviv, last July. The Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti) had received an e-mailed message from the Executive Director of Fed Cup and Women`s Tennis, Juan Margets, saying that the Fed Cup Committee in its meeting last September 15 decided to fine Indonesia, Pelti Deputy Secretary General Ferry Raturandang said here on Wednesday.
Indonesia must pay US$5,000 for canceling the participation, which violated The Fed Cup regulation no. 12; $6,600 to compensate ITF`s spending on preparations for the Israel Fed Cup, and $20,000 to the host, Israel. In addition to the fine, Indonesia will not be allowed to take part in the 2007 Fed Cup competition. ITF will give a chance to Indonesia to appeal the Federation`s decision until December 20, 2006.
Indonesia was in the play off World Group II after being defeated by China 0-4. For failing to participate in Israel, Indonesia would be put in the Group II of the Asia/Oceanic Zone in 2008. Indonesia has no diplomatic relations with Israel in protest against the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
