Indonesia opposition upset over helipad for Bush BOGOR - The construction of a helipad in Indonesia's famed botanical gardens for an upcoming visit by U.S. President George W. Bush will damage protected plants, an opposition party said on Tuesday. Bush will visit Indonesia this month on a brief stopover after attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam on Nov. 18. Details on the Bush visit have not been officially announced, but Indonesian media reports say it will take place on Nov. 20.

Bush is due to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the summer palace in Bogor, located inside the 87-hectare Bogor Botanical Gardens, south of the capital. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said using the gardens as a landing place for helicopters would hurt the fragile environment. "This means the (Indonesian) president is sacrificing environmental conservation for the sake of political interests," PDI-P said in a statement.

The Rakyat Merdeka daily, which showed picture of a mechanical excavator digging earth inside the gardens to prepare for the helipad, also criticised the cost of the Bush visit. The paper's Tuesday edition ran a story with a headline: "Bush in Bogor costs 1 billion rupiah (85,000 euro) an hour."

Bush first visited Indonesia in 2003 when he met President Megawati Sukarnoputri, who is also PDI-P's chairwoman, and Muslim leaders in Bali. Despite differences over Middle East policy and occasional rowdy anti-American demonstrations in Indonesia, Jakarta and Washington have generally good relations, and the Southeast Asian nation is considered a key ally in U.S. anti-terrorism efforts.

Yes, I can understand an opposition party is upset about the plan for a helipad for the visit of Bush.
It's a crazy plan, terrible to do that.
We where so 3 times in the botanical gardens in Bogor and it was so nice overthere.
I hope the government comes back of this terrible plan.

Yes sidia, I understand your distrust concern an opposition party, but I give it the advantage of the doubt.

I dont think it's only opposition party who is upset, but also majority of citizens (in Java, I guess). Check Media Indonesia online and you will read all disagreement by readers over the super-duper extra protection for Bush, in which including having school to have holiday off during the week when Bush is coming. Helipad is the ultimate craziness to protect Bush. And I read that his visit last for 6 hours (?)...ugh... I understand that as US president, he should be protected but, hey, who is the one who creates foreign affairs policies that make US as the most hated country in the world? Emoticon: Frustrated

Besides, I don't see any benefits of Bush' visit for Indonesians in general.
Politics? Indonesian as a moderate muslim country acknowledgement by US?? (Indonesia is not even an Islamic country!!)
Economy? What do Indonesians get from Exxon or Freeport in return so far but continuation of corruption and environmental problems??

In summary, there is no crucial issue of having Bush visiting Indonesia. So, it's not only a matter of helipad, am afraid... Emoticon: Shiny
