BANDUNG - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter Scale rocked parts of West Java this morning, in particular places like Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur. The head of the Bandung based branch of the State Meteorology and Geophysics Office (Badan Meteorologi dan Geofisika, BMG) told that the earthquake took place at eight o'clock in the morning. The epicenter of the quake was at 7.08° South, 106.80° East.
"The location of the quake was 17 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi with a depth of 79 kilometers. It's in an active area in the earths crust". The earthquake was not only felt in parts of West Java, Bogor, Sukabumi and Cianjur, but also by people in Jakarta. The strength of the earthquake was between II and III on the Mercalli Scale. A quake at a depth of 79 kilometers is strong enough to cause damage.
"At this moment we don't have any reports about damage from this earthquake", he said. He reminded that people didn't really panic, because this earthquake was smaller than those which occured here not too long ago. These earthquakes are probably all aftershocks, so the intensity of the earthquakes will decrease slowly.
