Indonesia plans to build national railway network JAKARTA - The Indonesian government plans to build a railway network on the country's major islands to help speed economic development, a newspaper reported Wednesday. The railway projects would include the expansion of existing networks in Java and Sumatra and the construction of new ones in Kalimantan , Sulawesi and parts of Papua.

The cost of improving the country's railway network would be as high as 11.6 trillion rupiah (1.2 billion U.S. dollars), far beyond the government's ability to pay, reported The Jakarta Post, quoting a senior official. Transportation Minister Hatta Rajasa said some of the projects were already underway in Java and Sumatra . "In Sumatra , our projects will focus on the improvement of railway networks to support the transportation of coal and other export commodities," Hatta said during a hearing with legislators Tuesday.

He added that in Java the project included the expansion of railway networks in greater Jakarta . Next would be the construction of a 500-kilometer railway network to link major cities in Kalimantan. Hatta said that for the project in Kalimantan and the eastern parts of the country, the government would award contracts to private companies.

"According to our estimates, every kilometer of the network will cost 14 billion rupiah (1.5 billion dollars) to build, and there is no way the state budget will be able to cover it," Hatta said. He said he believed the tender for the projects could be held soon after the amendment of the law on railways.

The amendment of the 1992 Railway Law is expected to open the door to privatization of the nation's railway service, which has long been highly regulated. The law stipulates that the government is obligated to provide railway infrastructure, including tracks, stations and signaling, as well as operate the entire system. It effectively grants state railway company PT KAI monopoly status.

Speeding up the economy?

Build roads like in Holland (Highways). outside the cities. And so that not every millimeter a stupid motor driver can enter it without looking. Which slows down the traffic.

Trucks MUST drive only on the left side. Must be garded well, very high penalty if the drive on the right side.

Now you have a so called high way through a city, but motorcycles slow it down. You need to hit the break every 10 seconds. Also traffic lights and bloody slow trucks as well as on the left as on the right. Also the go and from road are not seperated by a solid construction. no you can easily bring the traffic which drives towards you in danger if you are a truck or a bus, etc.

Also those real outside the city high ways should be forbidden for public transport to stop on.

Sort of Toll roads.

This wil speed up the economy.

Motor cycles become cheaper in price so more are being sold. Easy to buy them with a loan. So all the roads are block because of dangerous motor cycles.

Sorry for those I compaire with Holland. Because some of you say you should never compaire with Holland or anything els? Don't we do it daily comparing??? Even if you life in Holland?

Today in Europe it is more cheaper to go by plane from Amsterdam to Berlin then by train, or to Paris. So why you need a train for? Especially if traffic can cross it, while the train comes........

hlo this is Irsan.. this plan is very good to me because by build national railway network, besides it improve our economy development it helps communication be more easy. we can use this railway network to go to another city in another island easily. but, when I know the price that the government must pay is 11.6 trillion rupiah (1.2 billion U.S. dollars), it's above the price that the government can pay. maybe the government must care about other communication problem. like monorail project, until now I don't see the development of it Emoticon: Angry . and the increase of vehicle everyday that make many city like jakarta more crowded. the government should make other public transportation thet really make people prefer to use it than private vehicle.

  • Are you sure Albert ???
Also about the costs from Amsterdam/Schiphol-airport to the place you are staying included ..... sometimes I wondered whether, it is more 'cost-effective'
  • travelling by train is almost from the center to another center .....
  • if you live in the east of the Netherlands to leave from a nearby German airport instead, from Amsterdam/Schiphol ......
  • or in the south of the Netherlands from a Belgium airport ..... I myself do not know whether this is possible and if it is cheaper .....
  • you almost have to be a 'professor' to study all those 'tarifs' ......
  • is the European idea working for airlane-transport in Europe .....
  • is it a free market like in the U.S., I wonder ......
  • it looks also like saving a lot energy (???) .... (I wonder)
