Indonesia debates the difference between porn and pawn JAKARTA - Kartika Gunawan is not a typical men's magazine playmate. But even though not a nipple was visible in her starring role in the first issue of Indonesian Playboy in a concession to hardline Islamists calling for the publication to be banned she faces more than two years in jail for indecency.

Jakarta's police chief bowed to pressure from the radical Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) this week, proposing indecency charges against Ms Gunawan, another model and Indonesian Playboy editor Erwin Arnada. The magazine has been targeted as a symbol of Western decadence.

The Playboy furore has been swept along by pressure to introduce tough anti-pornography laws to outlaw "sensual behaviour", revealing clothing, even public kissing. It is part of a push to impose sharia law across Indonesia a campaign Abu Bakar Bashir, former leader of the Jemaah Islamiah terrorist network, vowed to spearhead on his release from prison last month.

Rock-throwing protesters attempted to ransack Playboy's Jakarta office when the first edition appeared in April, forcing Mr Arnada to relocate to the more tolerant island of Bali. He published his second edition from there last month, with numerous pages left blank after advertisers pulled out. Mr Arnada said he had ordered distributors not to sell to children or on the streets. He had altered Playboy's content to respect Indonesian values: "We will never publish the nude image".

"People don't look at us objectively, they talk about the name, the brand. Why don't they complain about other magazine's pictures? They are more hard core." Ms Gunawan, who posed in lingerie, remains defiant. Flattered by the offer to feature in such a "cool" publication, the trained nurse and aspiring actress says she is proud of her photographs, as they "prove I was able to make it in a men's magazine, and the photo concepts were normal, acceptable, not vulgar".

She is almost coy, confiding she would not have posed nude. She was aware of the opposition to Playboy but believed the row would have died down by the time her pictures appeared. Ms Gunawan was shocked when police indicated she would be charged. "Who is not scared of being jailed?"

Far more revealing photos can be found in racy local tabloids and magazines available on street corners. But Playboy's opponents, including mainstream Muslim organisations, maintain the magazine is part of a Western assault on Islamic values. Balkan Kaplale, head of the committee formulating the anti-pornography bill, warns that it represents a potential "time bomb" for Indonesia, undermining national dignity.

FPI leader Habib Riziq Shihab says that Playboy has "challenged" the Muslim majority and activists will "take the challenge, we will take to the streets soon". Opposition to the anti-pornography campaign is growing. There has been widespread condemnation from Playboy's new home, the predominantly Hindu island of Bali, with fears the move could be the death knell of its tourism industry. For now, individuals such as Ms Gunawan are pawns in the battle over Indonesia's identity.

"she faces more than two years in jail for indecency"

This is what Indonesia gets when they dont dare to take tough measures against fundamentalism en terrorism.

Suharto we need you! Or we need a new Jan Pieterszoon Coen for that matters. If Indonesia cannot live with it's freedom we should take it back as a colony under de flag of the U.N. or so. Emoticon: Shiny

What is the difference between porn in a magazine (of which you are not forced to read), or even harder porn on the internet which everybody can excess freely in Warnet or at home.

Porn on TV I can understand, but this stupid thinking about porn in a magazine? Why are the providers not forced to block it? Because nobody sees it?
Or because the fundamentallist also like to surf for porn.

Why is nobody protesting against the corruption, high prices of everything (food)? Why all those little meaning less things. Food is a daily need, you can't live without it. Porn you do not need to buy it. you can live without it. So why waist all the energy on useless subjects. Why not protest for something which is really needed in your country?

an other example i gave in the past.
When you try to sell a car, they are more interested if there is no corrosian on the car. Then the quality of the engine or other importent parts of the car. A little bit of corrosian and the start complaining but they did not even listen to the engine. Emoticon: Confused Emoticon: Confused Emoticon: Confused
