Java earthquake death toll exceeds 6,000 people YOGYAKARTA - Relief workers found more bodies in Indonesia's earthquake-devastated central Java region, raising the death toll to 6,234 people in the worst natural disaster in the Southeast Asian nation since the 2004 tsunami.

Indonesia's government and aid agencies are struggling to provide supplies and deploy medical workers for a growing number of patients in areas facing a lack of food and clean water. The number of patients needing treatment jumped to 46,148 people, including more than 33,000 with serious injuries, according to the latest report from the social affairs ministry.

"There is a lack of bed sheets, mattresses and other consumable medical equipment such as sterile kits for operations, stitching materials, x-ray film and pop plasters,'' the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement. The magnitude 6.3 quake that struck soon after dawn on May 27 destroyed more than 135,000 houses and displaced an estimated 647,000 people, the Associated Press cited Bambang Priyohadi, a provincial official, as saying yesterday.

At least 3,968 people were killed in the worst-hit Bantul district, 1,668 in Klaten, 165 in Yogyakarta city, 69 in Gunung Kidul, 26 in Kulonprogo, five in Purworejo, three in Boyolali, three in Magelang, and one in Sukoharjo, Ari Widyanto, an officer at the Social Affairs Ministry's earthquake hotline, said in a phone interview today. The government has dispatched 10 mobile clinics to treat patients who aren't receiving medical help in remote areas because the quake damaged roads and bridges. Survivors are being immunized against measles.

Aftershocks

Aftershocks are expected to diminish in the next two weeks, according to the country's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. There have been at least 851 aftershocks since the quake.

A 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004, producing a tsunami that left more than 220,000 people dead or missing in countries around the Indian Ocean, most of them in Indonesia. An 8.6 magnitude earthquake in March 2005 in the same region left more than 1,300 people dead.
