Central Java train crash kills 14, injures 12 JAKARTA - Two trains collided in Central Java province on Saturday killing 14 people and injuring 12, police said. The early-morning accident occurred when two trains bound from Jakarta to Surabaya, Indonesia's second city, collided, a police official at Gubug near the crash site said.

"According to the latest information, 14 people are killed and 12 are injured," police official Winarno told Reuters. One of the train drivers was among the dead. He said hundreds of passengers had been evacuated from the scene, and the busy line closed to all traffic. One of the locomotives derailed and plunged into a paddy field, the police official said.

Transportation Minister Hatta Radjasa, who was heading for the scene, said the accident might have been due to "human errors". "Based on temporary findings, there was no order from the train station to let one of the trains go but the train just went away," Radjasa told Elshinta radio.

Train crashes and other transport accidents are relatively frequent in Indonesia, where infrastructure has strained to keep pace with population and economic growth.

Hmm.. accidents happen of course, but how can two trains heading in the same direction collide? One of the drivers must be in a hurry then or something. Emoticon: Confused

According to todays' Kompas:

Menurut keterangan yang diperoleh, KA Semberani saat itu melaju kencang dari arah Jakarta lewat Stasiun Gubug karena tidak berhenti di stasiun itu. Sedang KA Kertajaya yang singgah di stasiun Gubug, keluar dari stasiun pada saat bersamaan. Masinis KA Semberani dilaporkan berusaha mengurangi kecepatan, namun tidak berhasil.

It was nearly trainstation, the slow train (economic class) is there normal waiting for the excecutief train becvause there is only one railroad.
The slow did not see the other and leave the waitingplace to early.
That was what the TV let see.

Three weeks ago I traveled by train on that route. It is a single track and therefor the trains have to wait on certain places along the track. This could be in a station which normally has more stages. I my view such accidents only happen because traffic control (not the drivers) in the local station is manually switching the points by old Dutch kabelsystem. I think of a malfunction (and lack of maintance of cause) of the points (wissels). My trip was ok in the "Executiv part" of the train back and forth Tegal-Surabaya ( 8 hrs) although most tracks in Indonesia are too bumpy. Its is cheaper to update their Kerata Api website then increase the comfortness of travelers on track.

Note: BBC News reported that trains are loaded and often carrying passengers on the roofs. This will not be allowed by Indonesian authority and room enough. He problably is mixing up with India where full loaded trains collapse into rivers with many many deaths leaving behind.

This happens with commuter trains in Indonesia as well.. however express trains are normally fully booked on seat number. They are not overcrowded generally.

If I recall it correctly, didn't the roof of a commuter train collapse because there were too many people on the roof? I think that was in the jakarta area a little while ago
anyways isn't it ridiculous that there is only one track between the 2 biggest cities of indonesia, so trains have to wait for each other? how hard can it be to build a second track, what with all that cheap labour around?

Instead of thinking of improving the nation's infrastructure this gouvernment just seems to be busy deliberating stupid things like the "pornography" bill. How naieve

exactly right, kiwimave
the big priorities should be infrastructure and education
instead all the attention goes to trivial matters like that pornography bill or playboy magazine... barely 300 idiots demonstrate and they get huge media coverage... all very naive indeed!

Easy to conclude... in the end all accidents can be related to human error...

They have found a scapegoat (who is dead and cannot defend himself) so this case can be closed.

The gouvernment is more busy in deliberating "more important things" like banning Playboy in this country..
