DENPASAR - Two Australians were sentenced to death by firing squad today for leading a drug smuggling ring on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali. The trials of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were being closely watched in Australia, which opposes the death penalty and where stiff sentences for drug offences have in the past sparked public outcry.
The pair were found guilty of leading seven other Australians in a foiled operation to smuggle eight kilograms (18 pounds) of heroin from Bali to their homeland last April.
A three-judge panel at the Denpasar District Court said Sukumaran, 24, played a major role in the drug ring and should face death. In a separate trial earlier Tuesday, Chan, 22, also was told he would go before a firing squad.

It pleases me that Indonesia won't be breaking tradition with the executions of the 2 ringleaders. I simply could'nt imagine an Indonesian soldier/law enforcement officer firing a weapon at anyone unless unarmed. As I recall they were very brave in East Timor until the arrival of the Australian Army where upon they smashed everything they could in a final act of juvinile defiance. How would you like to have this rabble in your trenches in a time of need. They probably would have pissed off at the first sign of the enemy anyway.
