Govt condemns publication of prophet's caricatures JAKARTA - Indonesia, which has the biggest Muslim population in the world, Saturday condemned the publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad by a Danish newspaper late last year and their reprint in several Western European countries recently. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, leader of 212 million people, said the publication of the caricatures clearly showed insensitivity towards the views and faiths of other religions.

"The abuse of the symbols of religion has hurt the feelings of Muslims. Allowing their publication on the basis of freedom of expression is something difficult to accept," he said. He said that in accordance with Clause 29 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, fundamental rights were not absolute and that in their implementation there should not be abuse of faiths. He said the Indonesian administration could understand the reaction and protests from the people towards the publication of the caricatures.

Twelve caricatures depicting the prophet, first published by the Jyllands-Posten daily in Denmark in September last year and then reprinted in newspapers in several other European countries, have sparked anger and sadness among millions of Muslims throughout the world. "Nevertheless, as a civilised people, we have to accept the apology tended by Denmark through its envoy in Jakarta and by the newspaper organisation," he said, adding that such an incident should not be allowed to recur.

Susilo said the Indonesian administration had taken diplomatic measures, both bilateral and multilateral, in handling the issue. The Indonesian president said the publication of the caricatures strengthened Indonesia's view for the need to have inter-religious dialogue and cooperation, not only among countries but also regions.

Very strange issue. I mean looking at these cartoons I must say that they are insulting for terrorists, but what is the problem for the average normal Muslim? They’re not really that much insulting for them.

I think you're right Jeroen, they're angry because "the west" has insulted them once more, but didn't actually see the drawings.

Also when we compare these jokes with what is made in Europe about our own (religious) leaders, the queen, etc. I cannot say these jokes are more insulting. A lot of noise about nothing.

Dear Jeroen,
You are right to publish the cartoons. Most of the people do not know where they are protesting against. The fanatics always find a reason to point their agressions. If you ignore your own faults, well find them elsewhere. They are pushed by their leaders. If you can not see the humor in the drawings, then you are to be complained.

I think it is a 'strange discussion' about these cartoons, it is like people from Mars like to communicate with people from Venus ........
They, Islamists, have a total different aproach towards religion, as others including Christians ...... do most of the participants know that Jesus, is also a prophete in Islam for instance ........
I myself, as a Crhistian, know that ....... so Islamists, if they are true believers, will not make Jesus ridiculous; this is what most of them also do not do ........ !!!!
Whilst in the western world everybody tends to use the phrase: 'Freedom of press and make any religion ridiculous .......

As always with religion affairs, I do not understand the commotion. I think I´m just too stupid to understand the cartoons at all!
And of course there are a lot of western journalists who are very willing to show the moslem people these cartoons while adding the question ´is this not insulting for you?´ Then they have there story.......and pictures.....

As my prophet was alive at this moment, I think that he should say you this:

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim,
Say: O you that reject Faith!
I worship not that which you worship.
Nor will you worship that which I worship.
And I will not worship that you have been wont to worship.
Nor will you worship that which I worship.
To you be your Way, and to me mine!

Surat Kafirun: 109

So for me, the Danish are allowed to think or believe whatever they want..
Me, as a muslim, don't even care about it. AS LONG AS THEY ALLOW ME TO BELIEVE WHAT I WANT.....

is this your way of asking for permission, and if so to who please?
people are looking and thinking way to much about religiouns
they even start to see eachother as a religioun and that is a fact what is
realy scaring me because that is how fundementalist get born.
as far as im concernt you may use your "freedom of opinionright"
as long as you dont insult people with it, because the day today
people take their religious more serious every day.
what the danisch did is not ok, the germans published copys of the
pics/drawings (they are realy good in thinking less and copy alot)
and i think they should apologize, beside fundamentalist i never saw
a moslim who insulted the christian/catholic believe.its ok to make jokes or drawings/pics about o.b.laden but not about a whole religioun.
make jokes about a pointy nose or a slow car, that way nobody gets hurt

Freedom of the press does not mean you can hurt other people and just get away with it. As far as I know, the moslem world never make fun of Christianity or other beliefs/religions. It also opens up a new discussion, how the West still misunderstands Islam. The picture of the Prophet with a turban shaped like a bomb is an utter humiliation. Islam, like every religion in the world, comes for peace. Should anyone of you try to remind me of the separatist movements in Lebanon, Palestine or Iraq, pease don't. They have nothing to do with religion. The conflicts in those countries are conflicts among nations. Then again, it wil be so unfair if people judge a religion by the attitude of some of its followers. They don't represent the religion itself.

I'm a moslem but I'm not proud of the terrorists who use Islam as a bumper, to justify their acts of terror like Bin Laden or Ayman Al Zawahri. I think they should be shot, hanged and beheaded.

Merely placing them ..without caring peoples feelings ...is questionable..,,,u dont have to be afraid of things happening...but things will not tell you in prior that It will happen..........

Some Examples!

Outside the Danish embassy in London, demonstrators burned the Danish flag before ripping it apart

Danish companies have reported sales falling in the Middle East after protests in the Arab world and calls for boycotts.

The editor of a Norwegian magazine which reprinted the Danish cartoons said he had received 25 death threats and thousands of hate messages.

A Jordanian editor was sacked for reprinting them, despite saying his purpose had been to show the extent of the Danish insult to Islam.

Up to 300 Islamic activists in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, rampaged in the lobby of a building housing the Danish embassy in Jakarta

Pakistani Islamists from Jamiat Ulma-e-Pakistan group burn Danish, Norwegian and French flags during a rally in Lahore February 3, 2006

Quite right! If we had the same mentality we would be very very busy burning done flags & embassies. Starting with the embassy of the U.K. because of "the live of Brian", then the embassy of Iran, because of the recent remarks of their president. Etc. etc.

These people have to learn that they should feel personally insulted if somebody makes a joke about something they consider sacred, holy or important in any way.

It's not about the cartoons themself. It's the fact that "the west" made and published these pictures about a religion that is not theirs.

The "nice example" of dutchguy is probably made by someone with a christian upbringing. The same goes for many other cartoons and the unequalled humoristic "life of Brian" by Monty Piton. All caricatures of christanity made by people from chistian societies.

A muslim will never make such a caricature of islam. The Quoran, the Prophet and Allah are to holy.

The reactions to these cartoons are only partly a reaction to the cartoons themself. Much more, they are a reaction to the growing imperialism from the west.

I'm sorry, but this is really non-sense. What "growing imperialism" do you mean? About 50-60 years ago nearly the whole Muslim world was a colony of a western country.

Since then they've all become independent, so what do you mean with "growing imperialism"?

I think their anger comes from the fact that being independent they’re not able to turn their country into something serious. Note that the most serious riots are in countries that have not been able to organize themselves very well.

I'm talking about growing imperialism towards islamic countries, because they are islamic .

Untill 60 years ago, western countries colonized the middle east, asia and Indonesia because of natural recources. The religion of the natives wasn't an issue as long as it didn't threaten trade (with the exception of spain in latin America).

Now islamic countries are pressured and even invaded to change the islamic regimes. I do not condone terrorism, nor do I think that women shouldn't be allowed to go to school. But that is my personal truth, based on my upbringing and the culture that I've grown up in.

We don't want to be invaded by the Taliban, so they can introduce the Sharia, nor do they want to be invaded by the U.S. so they can introduce playboy magazine.

These cartoons are just the fuse that could ignite the "let us be" bomb in the islamic world.

I don't think there's any imperialism towards countries because they're islamic. Irak was invaded because of "weapons of mass destruction". Even if this was only an excuse, the fact is that Irak was not invaded because of islam.

I think that you're too modest with saying "personal truth", to condone terrorism and allowing everyone to go to school are universal truths in my view.

The protests and anger at those stupid cartoons is totally out of proportion. Killing innocent people with suicide bombers is not an insult to a so-called "prophet of peace" (who was a warrior for ten years) and a "god of loving kindness"??? How much protest do we see against these crimes in the muslim world?

Another issue is that within (Arabic) Muslim countries many similar bad jokes are published about Jewish people. Also there are a few Arabic satellite TV stations that make western (European) people black. Just translate the words from a radical imam from a European country and it will not be nice what you hear. Also these are not jokes, but meant seriously. Emoticon: Angry

Till now this was not take too serious but, now the Islamic world thinks that we treat them so bad, we should re-consider this.

Dear Agung,

Thank you for confirming my statement by adding " in my view " to your reply. Your view is not everyones view, nor is my view, nor is the average stonethrowing muslim's view. Like it or not there are people in this world that truly believe in a violent Islam.

My point is: It's all a matter of percenption.

You mention the second gulf war. The weapons of mass destruction were just an excuse you say... An excuse for what??? A sceptic will say: for oil!, a naive person will say: it was simply a mistake of the CIA, Michael Moore says: To finish dad's job!

Fanatic muslims will say: to kill muslims, to eradicate islam!

I've seen the second gulf war on CNN: Shiny tanks, beautifull explosions, a warsim on TV! The picture on Al Jazeera: wounded civilians, Americans kicking down doors, grabbing women by the arm, disturbing households.

It's all a matter of perception... And the way this is going more and more muslims will become convinced that their religion is in danger and a jihad is called for.

Freedom comes with responsibility. Especialy the press should always ask the question on how their articles/columns/cartoons will be perceived. If the cartoonists/editor responsible for these cartoons would have spent a minute to consider this, they would have found that it is forbidden in islam to depict God and Muhammad, let alone make cartoons about either of them.

This raises the question for whom these cartoons were ment.
Were they ment for "the rest of the world" i.e. non-muslims. What was their purpose? Pure entertainment (at the cost of others?)
Were they ment to urge moderate muslims to take action? Then they should have known about islamic rules about depicting the prophet.

Now, if they were ment to aggrevate fanatic muslims and to help them to recruit new suicide bombers.... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
