City to go high-tech in flood watch JAKARTA - The city administration plans to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in flood-prone areas throughout the city to monitor water levels. The head of the Jakarta Natural Disaster Relief Body, Haryanto Bajuri, said the planned installation of the CCTV systems was part of the city's efforts to modernize its water level monitoring system.

"We will set up 180 cameras in five municipalities. We are currently installing the first part of the system," Haryanto told The Jakarta Post on Friday. He did not provide details on the exact locations of the CCTV systems, or the cost of the program to the city budget. The disaster relief body, set up by the city administration, includes officials from different departments and agencies. One of the body's main tasks is to monitor water levels in the city's major rivers.

Officials have identified 78 areas in the city that are prone to flooding, most in North Jakarta. These areas include Kampung Melayu, Cipinang Besar Utara, Cipinang Besar Selatan, Petamburan, Kedoya Utara, Pegadungan, Tegal Alur, Kelapa Gading, Pejagalan, Kamal Muara, Sungai Bambu, Kebon Bawang, Warakas, Sunter Utara, Sunter Agung, Tugu Selatan, Tugu Utara, Rawa Badak Utara, Koja, Semper Barat, Cilincing, Kalibaru, Semper Timur, Marunda, Rorotan and Sukapura.

The disaster relief body also has set up an early warning system to keep subdistrict heads informed of water levels in their areas. That information will then be forwarded to neighborhood chiefs before being made public. In response to a forecast by the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency that the peak of the rainy season was expected between January and February, Haryanto said his office had taken steps to anticipate and respond to possible flooding.

"We have prepared shelters, ambulances, rescue teams and food aid in the event of flooding," he said. Haryanto, who also heads the Jakarta Public Order Agency, said 14,500 rescue team members, 7,000 police officers and soldiers, and hundreds of volunteers were ready to assist residents affected by flooding. "We have also set up 324 temporary shelters and stationed 134 ambulance across the city. "The problem is that some residents refuse to leave their homes even when we issue warnings," he said.
