JAKARTA - Indonesia said it is deploying a fourth of its police force, or 47,800 officers, to guard every church in the country after warnings terrorists are planning attacks during the Christmas and New Year period. "The country has been put on top alert,'' National Police Spokesman Anton Bahrul Alam said at a press briefing in the nation capital Jakarta today. "We are increasing security in every church to anticipate any terrorism act.''
Australia and the U.S. this week updated their warning to citizens visiting the Southeast Asian nation because terrorists may attack citizens from western nations over the holiday period. The renewed warnings came after the country's intelligence chief Syamsir Siregar said on Dec. 7 he received information terrorists are planning attacks in Jakarta and other big cities during the festive period. Indonesia will deploy about 198,000 police across the nation during the holiday period, the police said on Dec. 8. In the capital, Jakarta, about 18,000 officers will be deployed from a week before the Christmas until New Year, city police spokesman I Ketut Yoga Ana said on the same day.
Indonesia has been hit by terrorist attacks almost every year since 19 people were killed in bomb attacks on churches across the country on Christmas Eve in 2000. On Oct. 1, bombs exploded in Bali, killing 23 people, including three suicide bombers, the country's worst attack since 2002 Bali bombings that killed at least 202 people.
Last year, nine people died after a bomb exploded outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta. In 2003, a bomb attack on the JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta left 12 dead.

It's sad that this is necessary in contemporary Indonesia... In good old Suharto time this was not necessary.

I think this is not only something 'Indonesia'. It happens in other countries in the world as well. I'm pretty sure security at Dutch mosques is higher as well.
