JAKARTA - The death of an Indonesian woman earlier this week has been confirmed by World Health Organization tests as the country's eighth bird flu fatality. An Indonesian health ministry official said tests conducted at a laboratory in Hong Kong show the 25-year-old woman died of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza virus.
The woman had been admitted to Sulianto Saroso hospital in north Jakarta, where six other patients, including two children, are undergoing testing for the virus. Avian flu has killed nearly 70 people in Asia since 2003. Health experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that could be easily transmitted between humans and kill millions of people.
