JAKARTA - Indonesian police have confirmed that the Jemaah Islamiyah bomb-making Azahari bin Husin killed himself during a fierce gunbattle yesterday with security forces in Batu, East Java. Azahari, a Malaysian, was the head of JI operations, and the mastermind of both Bali bombings and other suicide attacks in Indonesia.
Police chief General Sutanto said Azahari's body and those of two other militants were in a booby-trapped villa. Blasts from inside had blown a hole in the roof, he said, adding police had been told Azahari would be there. "During the shoot-out, they hurled bombs at us and at the end the biggest bomb caused their deaths."
Azahari was called "Demolition Man" by Malaysian newspapers, and has long been the top bomb maker in Jemaah Islamiah, the regional arm of al-Qaeda. A jounalist told ANTV of Jakarta that Azahari blew himself up Wednesday after being cornered by the police at his hideout. "The body was in pieces but his face could still be recognised by two members of the anti-terrorist unit from Jakarta," Karni Ilyas, who was with the police anti-terror unit when they entered the house, said. "He blew himself up together with the house."

Teletekst reports seven terrorists are killed and one of them (Azahari Bin Husin?) could be the brain behind the bombings on Bali and in Jakarta.
