JAKARTA - Indonesia will raise security measures across the country to anticipate potential terror attacks following the escape of a suspected al-Qaida leader from a U.S. military prison in Afghanistan, local media reported Saturday. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said that top al-Qaida operative Omar al-Farouq could be preparing a plot against Indonesia because he had been apprehended in the Muslim country.
The U.S. military only confirmed this week that al-Farouq - who lived in Indonesia for years and allegedly set up terror training camps - was among four prisoners who escaped from a heavily fortified detention facility in Bagram, Afghanistan, in July. Al-Farouq, born in Kuwait to Iraqi parents, was considered one of Osama bin Laden's top lieutenants in Southeast Asia until Indonesian authorities captured him in 2002 and turned him over to the United States.
"Because he was arrested in Indonesia, there will certainly be implications for Indonesia," Yudhoyono was quoted as saying by state news agency Antara. Yudhoyono said Indonesia had not received any information on how al-Farouq had managed to escape or his possible whereabouts. Indonesian officials said earlier that Washington had not informed them of al-Farouq's escape - even though he had been planning terrorist strikes in the region.
"We know nothing about it," said Maj. Gen. Ansyaad Mbai, Indonesia's anti-terror chief. "If it's true, the U.S. government ... should have informed us. This man is dangerous and his escape increases the threat of terrorism in Indonesia."
