Indonesia to establish tsunami early warning system JAKARTA - Indonesia will establish a tsunami early warning system in its most earthquake-prone region by the end of this year. The system, developed by German and Indonesian researchers, involves sensors on the ocean floor and buoys on the surface of the sea that transmit earthquake and tsunami activity to observation stations on the coast via satellite.

On Monday, a joint team will set sail for the west coast of Sumatra in order to install the first pieces of equipment. President of the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, Professor Bernhard Stribeny, says the research vessel will focus on activities beneath the ocean.

"We will start first investigating the sea floor. Our target is to investigate how the sea floor around Sumatra is composed geologically and morphologically. And we will investigate how the earthquakes are created in the crust, how the continental crust in the Indian ocean is moving towards the continent of Indonesia and, how by this movement earthquakes are produced and as a result whether a tsunami is generated or not."

Sumatra, on the western most end of the Indonesian archipelago was the hardest hit by the 2004 tsunami, losing 131-thousand people in the region of Aceh alone. In all, more than 176-thousand people in 11 countries were killed. Currently warnings of possible tsunamis are sent to Indian Ocean countries by Japan's meteorological agency and the US Pacific tsunami warning centre in Hawaii which came under criticism for not warning more aggressively of the disaster.

Unlike the Pacific, the Indian Ocean has no region-wide tsunami centre. After the disaster, Asian nations squabbled over where an Indian Ocean centre should be established, and settled for a network of several offices, each contributing its own expertise and resources.

Representatives of 27 Indian Ocean countries and United Nations commission had met in Australia in July 2005 to work out details for a tsunami early warning system designed to prevent a repeat of December 26 disaster.
